Any physical or behavioural attribute which is negatively valued and leads a person to be regarded as unacceptable or inferior
Why do people stigmatise?
Human tendency to classify the world by selfhood and otherness. Self identity is reinforced through setting the sick apart.
What is Stereotyping?
Whereby differences in people become linked to characteristics
What is Discrimination?
Acting differently towards people based on a characteristic or behaviour
What are the five types of stigma?
What is Discreditable Stigma?
Keeping stigmatising conditions hidden, except to close friends and family
What is Discrediting Stigma?
When a stigmatising condition cannot be hidden
What is Felt Stigma?
A sense of fear and shame due to one's condition
What is Enacted Stigma?
Discrimination felt by others
What is Courtesy Stigma?
Stigma felt by someone who is with the person open to stigma
What is the impact on individuals who feel stigma?
