38
Q

Functions of the Eye

A

Consists of three distinct tunic layers

  • Fibrous tunic:outermost layer…protective coat
  • Vascular tunic:middle layer…blood supply
  • Sensory tunic:innermost layer, retina. consists of rods and cones
39
Q

Rods

A

function in dim light. black and white vision

40
Q

Cones

A

function in bright light, color vision

41
Q

Optic nerve

A

extends from the retina to the visual regions of the brain

42
Q

Blind spot

A

center of the optic disc, where the nerve and blood vessels enter the eye…has neither rods nor cones.

43
Q

Supporting eye structures

A

extra-ocular muscles, eyelids, eyelashes, lacrimal glands (produce tears)

44
Q

Function of the Ear

A

Sense receptor organ responsible for hearing and equilibrium.

  • hearing is a function of the cochlea
  • equilibrium is a function of the semicircular canals and vestibule
45
Q

Three aspects of the ear

A

External: conducts sound waves through the air
Middle: conducts sound waves through bone
Inner: conducts sound waves through fluid

46
Q

Middle ear bones

A

Malleus(hammer): attached to the tympanic membrane
Incus(anvil):between the malleus and the stapes
Stapes(stirrup):between the incus and the oval window

47
Q

Cochlea

A

first structure of the inner ear

-snail-shaped, filled with fluid called perilymph and lined with sensitive nerve endings called hair cells.

48
Q

equilibrium

A

Vestibular system: (part of the inner ear) devoted to the control of balance and eye movement.

  • consists of fluid filled tubes
  • semicircular canals
