Solubility Flashcards
what is solubility
how much of a solvent will dissolve in solvent
explain unsaturated, saturated and supersaturated
UNSATURATED - more solute dissolves (more can come)
SATURATED - no more solute dissolves (max amount)
SUPERSATURATED - unstable, crystals form (more than max amount)
discuss the solubility trend for most solids
solubility increases as temp increases (NaCL, KNO3)
discuss the solubility trend for gasses dissolved in water
solubility decreases as temp increases
with more heat = more kinetic energy so gas molecules get excited and leave the liquid solution
lower temp = less KE so gas molecules cant leave the water solution (02 in H2O)
what is an electrolyte
compounds that form ions when dissolved in H2O (precipitate)
what is a strong electrolyte (examples)
all solute is present as ions (ionic compounds)
what is a non electrolyte (examples)
solute present as neutral molecules no ions (covalent molecules)
what is a weak electrolyte (examples)
solute presents as ions and neutral molecules (weak acids)
describe a precipiate reaction
2 solutions mixed and solid forms
