what does the social learning theory suggets?
the way children behave is an interaction between personal and environmental factors
what is the social learning theory based on ?
a belief that learning happens through observing, imitating and modelling the behaviors of others
what are the four principles of the social learning theory?
attention, retention, reproduction and motivation
what is attention ?
learning takes place when a child focuses their attention on a person who ‘models’ the behavior. Children are more likely to imitate the behaviour of someone they identify with or admire
what is retention?
what the child has observed is retained in their memory to be used when an opportunity occurs
what is reproduction?
what has been learned is reproduced or limited. It may be rehearsed in the child’d mind first and then limitated later when there is an opportunity
what is motivation?
children feel motivated because they anticipate intristic or extrinsic rewards. Be motivated ton repeat/ stop the behaviour depending on reinforcement.
What is reinforcement?
behaviour may be repeated or resisted and can be positive or negative
what are the types of reinforcement?
Positive, Negative or Vicarious
what is positive reinforcement?
the behavior is repeated because of personal statisfaction( intrinsic reinforcement) or rewards(extrinsic reinforcement)
what is negative reinforcement?
the behavior is not repeated to avoid an adverse experiences such as lack of statisfaction or being told off
what is vicarious reinforcement?
children may be motivated because they see that the person or “model” they observe is getting satisfaction or positive feedback + children may resist imitating the action because the model receives negative feedback from their action
what is the Bobo doll experiment?
children were shown adults being aggressive or non-aggressive towards the bobo doll. If they were aggressive their was either a reward, they were reprimanded or their was no consequences
What was the bobo doll experiment designed to show?
that children would copy the aggressive behaviour+ the outcome for the adult impacted on the likelihood of the children copying the behaviour
What was the result of the bobo doll experiment?
children learned aggressive behaviour through observation + children were more likely to imitate an adult who was rewarded than reprimanded.
