1
Q

What does it mean if a substance is volatile?

A

It has weak intermolecular forces and therefore, it will evaporate easily

2
Q

What is the general equation for making esters?

A

Alcohol + Carboxylic Acid ——-> Ester + Water

3
Q

Give the products of;

Methanol + Salicylic Acid

A

——> Methyl Salicylate + Water

4
Q

Give the products of;

Ethanol + Benzoic acid

A

——> Ethyle Benzoate + Water

5
Q

Why doesn’t nail varnish dissolve in water?

A

Because the bonds between water and nail varnish are weak so they can’t pull each other apart

6
Q

Why should perfume be very volatile?

A

So that it evaporates easily and the particles can easily reach the nose

7
Q

Why shouldn’t perfume react with water?

A

Because it shouldn’t react with water and sweat on the body

8
Q

Why is perfume insoluble in water?

A

So it doesn’t dissolve during washing or bathing

9
Q

How does nail varnish remover dissolve nail varnish?

A

Because it weakens the intermolecular forces of each substance but strengthens the intermolecular forces between the nail varnish remover and the nail varnish, this allows the nail varnish remover to tear apart (dissolve) the nail varnish.
