THE MOTIVE

-Jeroboam did not want the kingdom to turn back to the house of David
-if he allowed the people to offer sacrifices to the temple, they would turn back to their lord, to rehoboam, and they would kill Jeroboam

THE CONSEQUENCES

-God told him that his kingship is conditional/he would be successful if he followed the Lord/walked in ways of David
-personal/natural consequences
-Personal; Josiah will destroy Bethel, Jeroboam is crippled and restored as a warning, son Abijah dies, dynasty will be destroyed by Baasha
-National; Israel will be unrooted and taken into exile beyond the river
