In Vietnam during a prisoner capture operation, a Senior Naval Advisor was hit by enemy fire and believed to be dead. Thornton returned through fire and rescued the down member, carried him to the waters edge, and swam 2 hours into the ocean until they both were rescued.

Scaled 350 cliff to move in on a Viet Cong Camp to capture enemy members. During a fire fight he was hit by a grenade. He still coordinated the attack via comms until the capture was complete and a helicopter evac the team.
