  1. How do You install asphalt shingles?
A
  1. Nail the shingle in place. Continue up the roof to the six course trimming each shingle to be 6” narrower than the one below it. 2. Butt a full-length shingle next to it and nail in place. 3. Work your way up the roof nailing a single full-length shingle next to each of the shingles already in place. 4. After you’ve completed the sixth course, nail a full-length shingle in place to start the seventh course. 5. Measure and snap a chalkline across the top to made sure the row is straight. Snap a line every seven rows, so you can correct any errors before they get too serious.

  1. How shall you shingle a ridge?
A

When you reach the top, trim the shingle flash with the ridge. When you shingle the other side of the ridge, overlap the shingle on the ridge and nail it in place. Install caps.

  1. How shall you shingle hips and ridges?
A
  1. Cut 12” square hip cap from regular shingles. 2. Trim them so they taper at one end to 10”. 3. Snap a chalk line parallel to the hip and 6” away from it on each side of the ridge. 4. Attach each side of each cap with one roofing nail 1” from the edge, just above the sealing tab. Overlap the caps by 1”.

  1. How shall you lay a valley with architectural shingles?
A
  1. Continue shingling well across the valley but avoid driving nails into the flashing below. 2. Line the valley with a row of shingles. Lay out the position by snapping a chalk line that runs from the top to the bottom of the valley positioned so it is about 2” above the low point of the valley. Lay a row of shingles up the valley with the bottom edge of the shingle on the chalkline. 3. Lay shingles for the adjoining roof starting at the valley. Position the first shingle of each row so its lower corner lines up with the lower edge of the shingles going up the valley.

A
  1. Install the gutter apron, rake drip edge. 2. Overlap the eave and rake with roll roofing by about 3/8”. 3. Drive nails along the eaves and rake edges every 3” and about 1” from the edges.

A
  1. Apply the layer of roofing cement no more than 1/8” thick by trowel. 2. Overlap courses by 2”. 3. Nail the top edge with nails spaced approximately 18” apart. 4. Nail the lower edge and ends of the strip, driving the nails on 3” centers placing them at least 3/4” above the seam. 5. Seal the nail holes by covering them with roofing cement.
