Location of where the order is given and seeing the effects of their actions can both lead to people resisting pressures to obey

When the location moved from Yale University to a run down office block, obedience dropped from 65% to 48%

When the teacher and learner were in the same room obedience dropped from 65% to 40%
How does the manipulation of participants help people to resist obedience?
People will resist pressures to obey if they feel they are being manipulated and where the perceived costs are high

Garson et al manipulated participants into arguing in favour of an oil company. Once they realised they were being manipulated 76% disobeyed refusing to sign a consent form allowing the film to be used in court
How does locus of control help people to resist obedience?
Those with a high internal locus of control seek out information that is useful and are more likely to become leaders therefore they are less likely to obey
