1

Correlational study

looks for linear relationship between variables

2

Longitudinal study

looks at variables over time

3

Prospective study

looks at variable, which is believed to lead to specific outcome

4

Quantitative study

looks at numerical data/results

5

Hypothesis

probable outcome to a study. objective is to test hypothesis.

6

Null hypothesis

no relationship exists amongst variables being tested. research tries to reject the null hypothesis.

7

Dependent variable

variable outcome; what is being measured

8

Independent variable

variables believed to affect the dependent variable; what is being manipulated

9

Random Sample

drawn from entire population; equal chance of being chosen

10

Stratified random sample

large group broken down into subgroups and then subject selected randomly from subgroups

11

Cluster sampling

samples larger group then a specific subgroup

12

Standard deviation

amount a value deviates in relation to the mean or average; normal distribution = bell curve

13

Degrees of freedom

n-1; n= number in a sample

14

significance level

disprove null hypothesis; indicates a found correlation or relationship that didn't occur because of chance

15

chi-square test

used to prove relationship between two variables

16

T-test

shows how far a statistic deviates from the mean and whether differences between means of groups are significant
