1
Q

Define ‘EPOC’

A

The volume of oxygen consumed after exercise to return the body to its pre-excise state

2
Q

Describe the oxygen deficit after low intensity exercise

A

Low deficit because demand is easily met by the aerobic energy system

3
Q

Describe the oxygen deficit following high intensity exercise

A

Large deficit as anaerobic energy system can’t meet demand causing OBLA

4
Q

Describe the alactacid component

A
  • Accounts for 10% of EPOC
  • Requires 1-4l of oxygen
  • Respiration is high in the first three minutes
  • Fast component
5
Q

What does the alactacid component do?

A
  • Replenishes 50% of ATP and PC stores in the first 30 seconds
  • Replenishes haemoglobin in 1 minute
  • Replenishes myoglobin stores and full ATP and PC stores in 3 minutes
6
Q

What does the lactacid component rely on?

A

Buffering capacity of the blood to neutralise the effects of lactic acid (aims to remove lactic acid)

7
Q

What are the first two ways the lactacid component removes lactic acid?

A
  • Convert to pyretic acid and oxidised for the Kreb’s cycle (50-75%)
  • Convert to glycogen in glyconeogensis (10-25%)
8
Q

What are the last two ways the lactacid component removes lactic acid?

A
  • Removed as sweat and urine

- Hydrogen carbonate absorbs hydrogen ions to form carbonic acid and breathed out as CO2
