Flashcards in Rates of Reaction Deck (16)
What is the rate of an reaction?
The rate of a reaction is how fast a reaction takes place.
What are the four factors that contribute to the rate of a reaction?
Presence of a Catalyst
What happens during a reaction?
During a reaction, particles collide to combine and produce new products
What is surface area in a reaction?
In a reaction, surface area refers to how spread out the particles are (eg. a powder has high surface area, whereas a stone has low surface area)
What is the effect of particle size (surface area) on the rate of reaction?
The greater the surface area, the more reactions can occur, and thus, the higher the rate of reaction
What is concentration in a reaction?
The concentration is the number of atoms present in a reaction
What is the effect of concentration on the rate of
The higher the concentration, the higher the rate of reaction
What is the effect of temperature on the rate of
The higher the temperature, the higher the energy level of the reactants, and thus more reactions that occur. This also means the the rate of reaction is will behigher
What is a catalyst in a reaction?
A catalyst is a chemical used to speed up a reaction without affecting the end results of the reaction. They are present at the start, and present at the end.
What are the two types of catalyst?
What are two ways of following the course of a reaction?
Measuring the volume of gas produced
Measuring the loss in mass over time
What is the point on a reaction graph called where the line becomes horizontal (levels off)?
What are the four signs of a chemical reaction?
Effervescence (Gas Produced)
Precipitate (Solid Produced)
What are the two types of reaction?
What is an Exothermic Reaction?
An Exothermic Reaction is one where energy exits to the surroundings (the overall temperature increases)
