History of Parole
•1830’s: Australia: Foundationally: Alexander Maconochi: Superintendent of the Norfolk Island penal colony. He allowed inmates to work towards their release.
•He was an ex-British Naval officer and geography professor.
An inmate is released from prison having completed their entire sentence. They are released unconditionally with no parole.
Parole granted at the discretions of a parole board for selected inmates who have met the criteria (set forth by the parole board),
•Automatic parole after a set period of time.
•Approximately two-thirds (67.8%) of released prisoners were arrested for a new crime within 3 years of their release. More than three-quarters (76.6%) were arrested within 5 years of their release.
•Within a five year period 76.6% of released prisoners were arrested again for a new crime.
