Railway Operations are split in to 3 groups
Network Rail - Infrastructure
Train Operating Companies (TOC’s)
LUL (depots and sidings)
Day to day management devolved into 3 companies (Infraco’s)
SSL - Sub Surface lines
JNP - Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines
BVC - Bakerloo, Central and Victoria lines
Stopping trains other than at platforms can cause?
Passengers alighting and walking along lines that may be live
Overcrowding of stations and platforms
Physical and mental distress to passengers on trains in tunnels
Widespread disruption to train services
Who and when can SCD’s be used?
SCD’s may only be used by FRU traines personnel in an EMERGENCY and in the ABSENCE of railway personnel
Can brigade personnel remove SCD’s that are in place on a track?
NO - never
coach, wagon and freight ID details (location, destination and contents) are held where?
TOPS - a computer based system run by train companies that IC can request info from via Control
Trains running ‘ UNDER CAUTION’ will generally?
Travel on long straight visible stretches at max 50mph
On bends or bad visibility areas run as slow as 5 mph
Can crews be committed if a person who is in need of help or rescue is in a relative place of safety.
No - Not until suitable control measures are in place.
Can crews be committed if a person who requires rescue is in immediate danger
Yes
Brigade lookouts should have
Hand held radio on dedicated channel with Safety Officer at scene of operations
Acme whistle
Hand lamp/Wolf light/ (hours of darkness)
How do personnel warn approaching drivers of a hazard
Daylight - Hold both arms straight above head
Night - Waving a bright light violently from side to side in direction of approaching train
Track side telephones are identified how
Red telephone on a white background marked ELECTRIFICATION - (hold ringing bell for 4 seconds)
Signal post telephones are identified how
Diagonal black and white stripes. (connected to signal box)
