1
Q

What affects your Radiation dose?

A

Type and amount of radiation you’ve been exposed to

this can be affected by location and occupation

2
Q

The [ ] the radiation does, the more at risk you are of developing [ ]

A

higher

cancer

3
Q

Certain underground (eg. [ ]) can cause higher levels at the surface, especially if they release radioactive [ ] gas, which tends to get [ ] in people’s house

A

granite
radon
trapped

4
Q

Nuclear Industry workers and uranium miners are typically exposed to 10 times the normal amount of radiation. What safety measures are put in place for them? (4)

A

Protective clothing and face masks - prevent inhaling / touching radioactive material
Special radiation badges
Regular check-ups

5
Q

Radiographers are at a higher risk because they use ionising radiation, what safety measures do they use?

A

Wear lead aprons and stand behind lead screens to protect them from prolonged exposure to radiation

6
Q

How does altitude affect background radiation?

A

At high altitude (eg in planes) the background radiation increases due to more exposure to cosmic rays. Commercial pilots therefore have a higher risk of cancer

7
Q

How does being underground affect radiation dose?

A

Increases due to all the rocks around, therefore miners are at risk
