How did Rome win the first Punic war?

A

Determination and Luck
Luck: Rome copied Carthage’s ships– added a courvus (bridge with spike that attached to the opponents ship and allowed them to cross over for hand-to-hand combat)
Determination: they had built a 3rd fleet of ships and in the battle the first 2 got destroyed but they kept on trying and won with the 3rd fleet

A

They were competing to see who would control the West Mediterranean
They helped each other before so they were “too close for comfort”

A

Scipio Africanus Minor set up a blockade and starved Carthage. Rome burned the city, plowed salt into the ground, and sold survivors into slavery. Scipio Africanus minor didn’t believe Carthage should be destroyed .

Carthaginians are well rested and they had a good breakfast
Romans had to cross river(very wet)
Hannibal hid men in the bushes on the side of the river

people in bushes came out
Romans = very suprised by being surrounded by army in front of them and people hiding in bushes behind them

Hannibal gave freedom to non-romans in roman army to tell their cities to join Hannibal

What caused the third punic war?

A

People in Rome hate Carthage and Cato the Censor leads the anti carthage party. He ends every speech with “Carthago delenda est!” (Carthage must be destroyed). Carthage couldn’t fight anyone but finally had to and Rome pounced.

A

After the second punic war Hannibal became a political leader and helped the poor. This makes the Carthaginian oligarchs and Romans mad. They team up and capture Hannibal. Hannibal kills himself with poison.

A

Pallus and Verro wanted to fight on a open felid in summer so Hannibal had no advantages. The romans were in a straight line and the Carthaginians were in a curved line. When Romans charged the center of the Carthaginians line went backwards causing the Romans to be surrounded. All Romans died.

A

Rome chose two new consuls (Paullus and Varro) who were tired of delaying and combined their army’s. They find hannibal and meet him at Cannae

A

They chose a dictator (Fabius Maximus) who used Fabian tactics (lots of small attacks to wear Carthage out)

A

Hannibal wanted to cross the Apennines but he couldn’t because of the Romans. He tied torches to cattle and sent them in the other direction to trick rome into following them.

A

Romans had to march north to meet Hannibal (force march-very tired and hungry)
They meet him at lake Trasimene
Weather = very misty
Hannibal hides people in the hills (can’t be seen)
When the sun broke through, Romans realize they are surrounded on ALL SIDES
ALL ROMANS KILLED-some allies allowed to escape
