Define statistical infrequency

A

Behaviour which is statistically rare is seen as abnormal

A

A persons trait, thinking or behaviour is classified abnormal, anything abnormal is statistically rare or uncommon

Fear of dogs, not a lot of people hate dogs

Some abnormal behaviour is desirable

A

Very high intelligence is statistically rare but wouldn’t be classed as abnormal it would be desired as people would love to be highly intelligent
Therefore the label of abnormal can be unfair and often wrong

A

If abnormality is defined in terms of statistical infrequency we need to decide where to separate normal from abnormal for example depression symptoms such as difficulty sleeping is very common in a lot of people but it doesn’t mean they have depression. Depression can label someone as abnormal when in fact depression is common illness
