1
Q

A bit about aerobic metabolism?

A

Demands for energy are low
Oxygen, fat & glucose are used to produce ATP
Limiting factor is availability in working muscle

2
Q

A bit about anaerobic metabolism?

A

Glycogen is used to produce ATP & lactate

Limiting factor is glycogen availability and lactate accumulation in muscle

3
Q

When a horse is working at high intensity exercise both ….. & ….. pathways are used for energy production.
The majority of energy is produced by ….. metabolism

A

anaerobic & aerobic pathways

aerobic metabolism

4
Q

What is a horses resting heart rate?

A

20-40bpm

5
Q

What is the purpose of conditioning exercises?

A

Maximises performance
Maintains soundness
Induces physiological and structural adaptations

6
Q

What is the purpose of schooling exercises?

A

Develops neuromuscular coordination (motor control)
mental discipline
reinforces desirable behaviours
discourages/extinguishes undesirable behaviours

7
Q

What is LSD and what are the benefits of this training method?

A

Long Slow Distance -initial stage of conditioning (walking/trotting)
Improves CV & metabolic efficiency
Slow progress, good for young horses & rehabilitating
Stimulates adaptive changes in limbs & feet
Objective is to maintain fitness

8
Q

A bit about aerobic conditioning?

A

High aerobic endurance and capacity
ability to exercise for prolonged periods
Lower reliance on anaerobic metabolism
Delays onset of fatigue due to lactic acid accumulation

9
Q

What is interval training and what are the advantages?

A

exercise broken up -short ‘works’ seperated by partial recovery ‘rest intervals’
Allows more work/day then continuous exercise

10
Q

A bit about anaerobic conditioning?

A

Good for rapid acceleration & deceleration
-sprinting, jumping, abrupt changes of direction
used in last stage of training progress

11
Q

Strength training is…? and a bit about it

A

sport specific -knowledge of movements & action of sport

enhances ability to recruit more fibres, increases muscle size (hypertrophy)

12
Q

High intensity work =…?

A

large % of fibres recruited, opposite for low intensity work

13
Q

How do we manage DOMS? (delayed onset muscular soreness)

A

good warm up & warm down
suppling exercises
rest day w/ light exercise
Adequate conditioning

14
Q

Warm down enhances…?

A

lactic acid removal

15
Q

List 4 stages of the daily work out

A

warm up
schooling or conditioning exercises
warm down
cooling out
