Q

How would you recognise scoliosis?

A

Scoliosis is recognised when either one shoulder or one hip is higher than the other. Sometimes a person will have both shoulders and hips out of alignment resulting in an ‘s’ shaped curve of the spine. When it is just the shoulder or hip that is higher than the other you will notice a ‘c’ shaped curve in the spine

Q

Which muscles are stretched and therefore weak for kyphosis

A

Kyphosis will have stretched trapezius, rhomboids, erector spinae group and possibly quadriceps, hip flexors and posterior neck muscles

Q

How would you adapt your massage for each condition?

A

More effleurage and petrissage on the tight muscles Compressions to ease any pain in the area.
Percussion moves on the stretched muscles

Q

Describe how to teach apical breathing lateral costal breathing

A

Place hands on rib cage as far out to the sides of your body as you can. As you breathe in try to push your hands outwards to expand the rib cage laterally, hold for four seconds before breathing out

Q

Which postural condition will benefit from doing the apical and lateral costal breathing exercises?

A

a kyphotic condition would benefit from breathing exercises as the hunched over posture will be constricting the breathing.

Q

Who ( client type ) is usually affected by Kyphosis and what has caused each postural defect?

A

kyphosis usually develops in puberty when a person shoots up quickly to be much taller than their peers so they hunch over to be more like them, or because a girl grows a large bust when her peers have not.

Q

Who ( client type ) is usually affected by Lordosis and what has caused each postural defect?

Q

Who ( client type ) is usually affected by Scoliosis and what has caused each postural defect?

A

Scoliosis is usually due to habitual bad posture from carrying heavy bags on one shoulder, standing with all your weight on one leg, sitting with legs underneath you for long periods or a job that involves asymmetric lifting, carrying or standing.
