How long does the postnatal period last?
6-8 weeks (6 week doctor check)
What does puerperium mean?
The period of about 6 weeks after child birth during which the mothers reproductive organs return to non-pregnant condition
What is the purpose of postnatal care?
- Assess the mothers and baby’s wellbeing
- P/N screening
- Discuss contraception
- The time to pick up any abnormalities
Who provides postnatal care to women?
- GP
- Health visitors
- Midwives
- Maternity support worker/ health care assistant
On average, how long does it take for the uterus to return to a pelvic organ?
10 days
What is the name of the process where the uterus returns to a pelvic organ?
Involution
What are after pains and how long do they normally last?
- Uterine contractions after birth, they are associated with most women women, especially those who are multigravida and who are breast feeding.
- Normally last around 2-3 days but can be longer for women who are breast feeding
- If it lasts too long, it could be a sign of infection
What are 3 treatments you could offer a women going through after pains?
- Mild analgesia
- Warm bath
- Reassurance that it is normal
- Heat packs
- Relaxation and rest
What is lochia?
Discharge from the uterus after birth
- It is very natural
- Rid the uterus of any debris and bacteria

- Rubra
- Serosa
- Alba
What does PU and NPU stand for?
Passed urine / not passed urine
What does BO / BNO stand for?
Bowel open / bowel not opened
