Never place a ladder of any type, wood or metal, against what appears to be a metal superstructure. It may be some form of electrical conductor.

Maintanence of portable aluminum ladders: washed when necessary with warm soapy water. Nicks or burrs removed with a fine file.
Visual inspection of portable ladders once a week and after use. Look for discoloration ( excessive heat exposure) etc…
For extension ladders: candle wax, paraffin, and grease used.

Grease shall be cleaned from guiding grooves and deviated each year if when dried out.
On all ladders candle wax or paraffin shall be applied every 3 months. Any wax thinner than candle or paraffin rubs off almost immediately.
Pulleys: 1 or 2 drops of oil once a year.
Halyards: when Manila rope becomes frayed or twisted it should be replaced.
Mechanical lock devices kept ckean and well oiled.
Hook ladders kept ckean and well oiled.
