What do ‘Population Pyramids’ show?

A

They show in the form of a graph the percentage, or number, of males and females in each age group

What do Population Pyramids reflect?

A

They reflect the structure of the population in terms of for example the number of babies being born and the number dying

A

A lot of young people in the population

Give an example of a country which has a changing population structure

A

Mexico, because it has a large youthful population. Under 15’s make up 31% of the population

Why is Mexico’s population structure slowly starting to change?

A
  • Because it has now managed to achieve a much lower death rate, just 4.78 deaths per 1000
  • People are living longer as well due to more childhood vaccinations being introduced

Why are childhood vaccinations being introduced?

A

To reduce infant mortality, which is the number of children who die before the age of 1

How long is it expected to take before Mexico’s population levels out?

A

At least 50 years. Today’s young people will then be moving into old age
