Q

POMO vs MARX

A
  • Working class males/rebellion against capitalism (most important factor = class)
  • POMO = class is irrelevant
2
Q

Why is POMO different to FUNC or MARX?

A
  • Bennett and Heatherington suggest class, ethnicity, gender = irrelevant
  • Reject traditional ways of society (reject meta narratives - ‘big story’)
  • Marx = class
3
Q

How does Sarah Thornton criticise Marxist explanations for the formation of subculture?

A

Class is irrelevant because most youth cultures are media generated and Marxism ignores this

4
Q

What does Lyotard say?

A
  • Meta narratives are in decline because of the victory of capitalism over prediction of Marxism
  • Rather than rebelling, young people have embraced consumer culture (e.g. phones)
5
Q

What does Lyotard mean by ‘victory of capitalism’?

A

Youth do not care for each other as Marxists believed instead, paying into consumerism

(buying stuff instead of helping each other)

6
Q

What does Fragmented mean?

A

YC have become increasingly fragmented

= Connections have been divided/broken up e.g. language, race, income (class), gender

7
Q

Why do POMO criticise the CCCS?

A

As many subcultures have people from both working class and middle class backgrounds

8
Q

Why do POMO argue class, gender and ethnicity are no longer important?

A

People have developed their own sense of style, spectacular subcultures (punks, skinheads) are a thing of the past

9
Q

What does Heatherington argue?

A

Fashion/music styles are too ‘bitty’ to be described as subcultures, it is too fragmented

10
Q

What does Willis claim?

A

Too much diversity that there is no single type of YC/SC

youth don’t want to conform as they have more induvalistic tastes than people from the past

11
Q

Ravers

A

Researched by Manchester institute of popular culture

  • Critisised CCCS for concentrating too much on W/C
  • YS aren’t created to resist capitalism/a response to urban decay
  • Ravers worked during week/partied during weekend
  • MIPC = ‘Student leisure based lifestyle for wage earners’
  • Reputation for drug use = ecstacy
12
Q

Why did Thornton agree with MIPC?

A
  • Class/gender isn’t important (ravers came from all classes/genders)
  • Not close knit groups (only together for certain events/only part of their life)
  • CAGE = not important
13
Q

What did Maffesoli argue?

A

’ People no longer identify with a single YC but may belong to a number and switch’ = Tribalisation

14
Q

How did Bennett develop Maffesoli’s theory?

A
  • Youth subculture no longer suited the fluid style of the postmodern world (neo-tribes) = loose grouping of people with similar tastes/consumer choices
  • Argues that sc today are pluralistic (diverse)/shifting
15
Q

What did Polhemus say about the supermarket of style?

A
  • Young people pick and choose their identity
  • PM argue that style = important
  • Incorporation rather than bricolage
  • Globalisation & supermarket of style
16
Q

SUMMARY

A
  • Postmodernists say that YC are no longer relevant in today’s society
  • Suggests that youth styles = fragmented/diverse
  • No longer based on CAGE
17
Q

Strengths

A

✓ Schlor = argued young people are less politicalised - don’t require spectacular subcultures to revolt against government

✓ Some people = unwilling to identify themselves to a particular youth group - they don’t want to be labelled (thus developed loose neo-tribe affiliations)

18
Q

Weaknesses

A

X Hodkinson = Goths are clear/defined, people remain - into adulthood ‘goths, goth for life’
X Harriet Bradley = PM’s ignore structural differences (wealth) can affect what a person can afford
X Marxists = does not address real issues of inequalities in society (class)
X Chomsky = Criticises PM as it is too vauge / become a buzzword for anything linked to style (PM theory cannot be used as a bias for research)
