Terms to know for Exams: do not need to know what poems are associated with the term

Imagism
A
The image is all that matters, its “rightness” and complete focus
E.g. In the Station of Metro by Ezra Pound (1/28)

Enjambment
A
When one line of poetry runs into the next with no punctuation
- You do not pause at the end of a line, unless there is punctuation.
E.g. A Blessing (1/28)

Ballad
A
Four lined stanzas rhyming e.g. A-B-C-B
- not defined by their subject matter, and can be about anything
E.g. Sir Patrick Spens (1/28)

A
Live for today or death or old age may intervene

Sonnet
A
- 14 lines (no more, no less)
- Pentameter (5 feet per line; 2 syllables = 1 foot – 10 syllables per line)
- Iambic (first syllable unstressed, second is stressed [per foot])
- Rhyme
• English (Shakespearean) Sonnet – ABAB CDCD EFEFGG
• Petrarchan (Italian) Sonnet – ABBA ABBA CDCDCD
• CDCDCD – ending can vary (there are about 5. Turn – change in intellectual direction
