1
Q

What is photosynthesis?

A

Photosynthesis is the building up of carbohydrates(glucose) from carbon dioxide and water using radiant energy from the sun that is trapped by chlorophyll. Oxygen is released.

2
Q

What are the raw materials required for photosynthesis?

A
Carbon dioxide (from the atmosphere)
Water (from the soil)
Radiant energy (from the sun)
Chlorophyll (in chloroplasts of green plants)
Enzymes
3
Q

What are the products of photosynthesis?

A

Glucose (stored in plant as starch)

Oxygen (released into atmosphere)

4
Q

What are the phases of photosynthesis?

A

Light dependent phase (Light phase)

Light independent phase (Dark phase)

5
Q

Explain the process of the light dependent phase

A

> takes place in grana of chloroplasts
radiant energy (from the sun) absorbed by chlorophyll molecules in thylakoids
energy transformation takes place: radiants energy transformed into chemical energy

6
Q

Explain the process of photolysis

A

> Water molecules are split up into energy-rich hydrogen atoms (transferred to light independent phase) and oxygen atoms (released as gas into atmosphere)
Energy carrier ATP is formed (used again in light independent phase)

7
Q

What is ATP?

A

(Adenosine TRIphosphate)
> energy carrier in living cells
> large molecule made up of an adenosine molecule and three phosphate (P) molecules

8
Q

What happens to ATP?

A

> when energy is needed by a cell, ATP is broken down into ADP (adenosine DIphosphate) and a phosphate molecule and energy is released
when energy is released in a chemical reaction, it is used to form a bond between ADP and P to form ATP

ATP is formed in the light dependent phase and releases energy in the light independent phase
