4
Q

What is the avionics system?

A

It is electronic systems are provided in the aircraft for communication and navigation. Major components are located in equipment racks mounted at various stations in the fuselage. Antennas are mounted flush with the fuselage skin where possible in order to eliminate additional aerodynamic drag.

5
Q

Explain what instruments and indicators of instrument systems do?

A

They are grouped according to function or panels in the flight station. The main instrument panel is divided into three sections. The pilots indicators are on the left section. The right section , called the copilot’s instrument panel, holds the copilot’s flight indicators and hydraulic system pressure indicators. Engine indicators are on the center panel. Electrical system indicators, fuel quantity indicators, and anti-icing and de-icing indicators are on the overhead control panel.

6
Q

What is an ADI and how many are on the aircraft?

A

Attitude Display Indicators (ADI), one each located on the pilot and copilot main instrument panel center just below the windscreen. The ADI gives input to the pilot and co-pilot on the relative attitude of the aircraft.

7
Q

What is a HSI and how many are on the aircraft?

A

Horizontal Situation Indicators HSI, one each located on the pilot and copilot main instrument panel directly below the ADI. The HIS’s display heading and distance inputs to the pilot and copilot from a wide range of navigation systems which are selectable.

8
Q

What is a BDHI and how many are on the aircraft?

A

Bearing Distance Heading Indicators, one each located on the pilots and copilots main instrument panel, and the other two are located on the navigator’s instrument panel.

9
Q

How many radar indicators are there in the C-130T?

What are the radar indicators?

A

Two radar indicators are utilized. One on the bottom right corner of the pilot’s main instrument panel, and the other is located at the navigator’s station.

10
Q

How many radar altimeter indicators are there in the C130T?

What are the radar altimeter indicators?

A

There are two radar altimeter indicators. One each located on the pilots and copilots main instrument panel. They give input to the pilot and copilot on the actual aircraft distance to the ground.

11
Q

How many barometric altimeter indicators are there in the C130T?
What are the barometric altimeter indicators?

A

There are three barometric altimeter indicators. One each located on the pilots and copilots main instrument panel and the third is located on the navigator’s instrument panel. The barometric altimeter indicator gives input to the pilot and copilot on the aircraft distance above sea level.

12
Q

How many airspeed indicators are there in the C130T?

What are the airspeed indicators?

A

One each located on the pilots and copilots main instrument panel. The airspeed indicator gives an input to the pilot and copilot on the airspeed of the aircraft measured in knots (not to be confused with the ground speed measured in MPH).

13
Q

What does TCAS stand for?

A

Traffic Collision Avoidance System

14
Q

What does TCAS do?

A

The TCAS indicator is located on the pilots main instrument panel. The TCAS indicator gives input to the flight crew on the air traffic around the aircraft. It also gives instructions on how to move the aircraft to avoid a mid-air collision.

15
Q

What does CDNU stand for?

A

Control Display Navigational Unit

16
Q

What does the CDNU do?

A

The CDNU’s give the flight crew the ability to change radio frequencies, navigational stations, and flight planning for waypoints to be displayed on the radar indicator.

17
Q

How many CDNU’s are on the C-130T & where are they located?

A

3 they is one located on the pilot’s side of the center stand electrical panel, the second is located on the copilot’s side shelf extension and the third is located on the navigators instrument panel.

18
Q

What does the ARN-151 GPS do?

A

(Global Positioning System) - There is one GPS system located in the aircraft controlled by the CDNU. The GPS system is a self-contained system that gives heading and distance information to the flight crew on any way-point anywhere in the world.

19
Q

What does the LTN-100 INS do?

A

(Inertial Navigation System) There are two INS systems installed on-board the C-130. The number one system is controlled by a controller located on the co-pilot side, center stand electrical panel. The number two system is controlled using a controller located on the navigators instrument panel. The INS system gives the flight crew input on the position of the aircraft and distance and heading information to any waypoint in the world.

20
Q

What does the C-12 compass system do?

A

There are two C-12 compass systems installed on the C-130 and both are controlled ising controllers located on the navigator’s main instrument panel. The C-12 system gives the flight crew relevant bearing information for various indicator displays.

21
Q

What does the standby compass do?

A

There is only one standby compass located on the top left copilots main instrument panel. The standby compass consists of an adjustable magnet placed in a viscous fluid and it provides the flight crew with a relative bearing of the aircraft.

22
Q

What does TACAN stand for?

A

Tactical Air Navigation

23
Q

What does the TACAN system do?

A

There are two different TACAN systems on the C-130. One is the ARN-139 and the second is the ARN-118. They are both controlled using the CDNU and both give heading and distance to a TACAN station. The main difference is that the ARN-118 provides the ability to become a mobile TACAN station for refueling duty.

24
