Q

Describe the Cockayne project, 1615-17?

A

Alderman Cockayne suggested sending finished cloth to North Europe to save money and raise revenue. The Merchant Adventurers’ would lose their monopoly to the King’s Merchant Adventurers, their license to sell goods, with a £10,000 loan to sell. They lacked money to buy wool, couldn’t make the cloth, and lacked contacts to sell. By 1618 the cloth industry collapsed, harming sheep shearers and weavers. The Merchant Adventurers’ had to pay £10,000 and the cloth production never hit its peak at 1614 again. Loans to the crown from the city dried up with trust of companies such as the East India company of James.
