What is cultural transmission?
The examination of ecological citites.
What is differential association?
Suggest that it is very difficult for young people living in urban areas to be law abiding as, their association with people who make their living from crime is likely to lead them into trouble with the law.
What are illegitimate opportunity structures?
If young people are denied legitimate opportunities- jobs, then they may turn to an illegitimate opportunity structure. but their access depends on the availability of deviant subcultures.
What are criminal subcultures?
Often resemble businesses in that skilled young people can be promoted upwards if they impress.
What are conflict subcultures?
Inner-city areas may be dominated by territorial street gangs which engage highly in violence.
What are retreatist subcultures?
Those who fail to gain access to either the criminal or conflict subcultures may form retreatist subcultures in with the major activities are drug use.
Evaluate Cloward and Ohlin.
- assume that the official picture of crime is accurate and fail to acknowledge that such statistics may tell us more about police stereotyping or profiling that criminal activity.
