Create, promote (Intervention approach)

A

(Health promotion) Approach that does not assume a disability is present or that any aspect would interfere with performance. To provide enriched contextual and activity experiences that will enhance performance for all people in the natural contexts of life .
Ex: Teach cooking to newly independent

Establish, restore (Intervention approach)

A

(Remediation, restoration) Designed to change client variables to establish a skill or ability that has not yet developed or to restore a skill or ability that has been impaired.
Ex: Strengthen arm after surgery with exercises.

Maintain (Intervention approach)

A

Designed to provide the supports that will allow clients to preserve the performance capabilities they have regained, that continue to meet their occupational needs, or both. Assume without continued maintenance, performance would decrease, occupational needs would not be met, or both.
Ex: Maintain safe access for low vision person by lighting hallway in the home.

Modify (Intervention approach)

A

(Compensation, adaptation) Directed at finding ways to revise current context/activity demands to support performance in the natural setting, including compensatory techniques such as enhancing some features to provide cues or reducing features to reduce distractability.
Ex: Use hand cuff so someone with low grip strength can use utensils.

Prevent (Intervention approach)

A

(Disability prevention) Designed to address the needs of clients with or without a disability who are at risk for occupational performance problems. To prevent the occurrence or evolution of barriers to performance in context. Interventions may be directed at client, context, or activity variables.
Ex: Teach factory workers to properly stand to avoid fatigue/injury.

Important to address in substance abuse interventions:

A

Evaluation/intervention focus on:
• Performance patterns (bad habits?)
• Use of time (filling it, especially leisure)
• Relapse prevention
• Cognitive and perceptual functions/skill development
• Social interaction, social skills, self-expression
• Daily living skills (ADLs may be affected)
• Acquisition, development, maintenance of valued occupational and social roles (ie: work?)
