1
Q

What is diffusion?

A

Spreading of particles of a gas/ of any substances in a solution
Net movement from area high concentration –> area of low concentration

2
Q

How can the rate of diffusion be increased?

A

Increasing difference in concentration

3
Q

How does diffusion help cells to respire?

A

Oxygen required for respiration passes

through cell membranes by diffusion

4
Q

What is osmosis?

A

Diffusion of water across boundaries

Dilute (high water concentration) solution –> concentration (low water concentration) solution

Partially permeable membrane allows passage of water molecules

5
Q

What causes osmosis?

A

Differences in the concentrations of the solutions inside and ouside cells

6
Q

Similar between movement of molecules in osmosis and diffusion

A

Random

Requires no energy from cell

7
Q

What is active transport?

A

Cells
Substances absorbed against concentration gradient
Partially permeable membranes

8
Q

What does osmosis require?

A

Use of energy from respiration

9
Q

Importance of osmosis? (in terms of ions)

Give an example

A

Cells able to absorb ions from dilute solutions

Root hair cells
mineral ions
dilute solutions in soil

10
Q

Use of active transport in kidney tubules?

A

Glucose

Reabsorbed in kidney tubules

11
Q

What are dissolved substances moved by?

A

Diffusion and active transport
