  • Is the patient satisfied and agrees to use it?

  • Are mechanical joints aligned with anatomical
  • Comfort in standing and sitting:
    • Pressure minimized where breakdown can occur
  • ls client stable when standing

Dynamic exam of device on client

A
  • ls device stable when patient is moving?
  • ls there excessive movement of device on the skin?
  • Ensure device does what it is supposed to do:
    • If patient has foot drag without the device then with it they should not!!!
  • Recognize gait disorders produced as a result of the orthotic:
    • lf patient was buckling and you gave them a KAFO locked then expect deviations associated with this device (ex. circumduction)

Examination of skin in pt with orthoses

  • Check skin before putting device on patient
  • Check for signs of skin irritation or pressure
  • If skin breakdown, wait until it heals.

Provide an Accommodation Schedule

A
  • Depends on type of orthoses and person
  • Usually start at about 2 hours and then gradually increase time:
    • lf redness wait ~5-10 minutes should return to normal
    • Look for blisters, abrasions, wounds
      • TEACH PATIENT
