  • conceptual frameworks that provide principles that under pin practice
  • serve to validate is self through the production of its own scientifically tested body of knowledge
  • help us decide that we know and what we need to know
  • much of what nurses do is hard to measure so theories are vital to analyze and explain what nurses do
