1
Q

Who proposed the multi store model of memory?

A

Atkinson & Shiffrin in 1968

2
Q

What are the three key boxes in the multi store model of memory?

A

The sensory register linking to short-term memory which links to long-term memory.

3
Q

What is the duration, capacity and coding of the sensory register?

A

Duration equals less than one second.
Capacity equals very large.
Coding equals the five senses.

4
Q

What is the label for the arrow between the sensory register and short-term memory?

A

Attention – items must be given attention in the sensory register in order to transfer them to the short-term memory.

5
Q

What is the label for the arrow from the shorter memory to the long-term memory?

A

Rehearsal – items must be rehearsed regularly, maybe through the rehearsal loop, to transfer from the short-term memory - long-term memory.

6
Q

What is the label for the arrow from the long-term memory to the short-term memory?

A

Retrieval – memory can be extracted from long-term memory and brought into the short-term memory through conscious retrieval.

7
Q

What is the label for the arrow coming vertically down out of short term-memory?

A

Recall - memory can be recalled from the short-term memory.

8
Q

What are the evaluation points for the multi store model of memory?

A

+Baddeley 1966 – wordlists show the LTM in STM have separate stores

  • KF - many types of short-term memory not just one box – memory of digits was poor but memory of reading aloud was good
  • A lot of supporting research use artificial material – Baddeley and Peterson X2
