What is mitosis?
The division of the Nucleus to produce 2 genetically identical daughter cells.
Prophase
chromosomes coil and condense.
Nuclear envelope breaks down.
Microtubules form spindle fibres that link opposite poles.
Centrioles move to either pole, attach to centromeres and move chromosomes to centre
Metaphase
Align along metaphase plate
Anaphase
Chromosomes are separated to chromatids.
They are pulled to either pole of the cell by the shortening of spindle fibres
Telophase
Chromatids reach the poles and become chromosomes.
They uncoil, nuclear envelope re forms as does nucleolus.
Cytokinesis
Division of the cytoplasm.
In animals the cleavage furrows and pinches off.
In plants vesicles align along the metaphase plate, they fuse and form a membrane.
