Purpose of mitosis
- Enables growth
- Replace worn out or damaged cells
- Enables identical genetic information to be passed on to each new cell
Chromosome
One of the 46 rod-like structures that appear in the nucleus of a human cell at the commencement of cell division
Chromatid
One pair of identical strands formed when the chromosome duplicates
Centromere
A constricted portion of a chromosome that joins the two chromatids when a chromosome duplicates
Spindle fibres
The framework of fibres (microtubules) that radiate out from the pairs of a cell during cell division
Centrioles
A structure in a cell consisting of 2 rings of microtubules
Cytokinesis
The division of the cytoplasm to form 2 daughter cells
What happens during Interphase
DNA replicates
What happens during Prophase
Nuclear membrane breaks down
- Chromatin to chromosome
What happens during Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell (equator)
What happens during Anaphase
Chromatids are separated and move to opposite sides of the cell
What happens during Telophase
Nuclear membrane reforms
- Cytokinesis (cytoplasm divides)
