What is malignant hypertension

A

A sudden case of extreme hypertension (systolic>180 — Diastolic>110) specifically that associated with acute organ impairment that can lead to end-organ damage

A

Sometimes with headaches or dizziness or nausea

Or retinopathy or chest pain etc

A

Drug Abuse
Non-adherence to medication
Poor BP control

What is the treatment for malignant hypertension?

A

Slow lowering of blood pressure with anti-hypertensives (but not too slow, within minutes or hours)
Mainly Sodium Nitroprusside
