DANIEL 1

-God is with His people amongst hard situations
(God's sovereignty)
-God will vindicate and prosper His people if they remain faithful to Him
-God is in control, not the Babylonian kings

-If you persevere in commitment to covenant faithfulness, God is able to deliver you
-If you oppose God by exalting yourself, by ultimately setting yourself up as your own god, you will bring about your own demise

-To live as kingdom people, to live in our salvation, to live eschatologically, means to live truly human

-You see Nebuchadnezzar go from his god being the only dominant god, and goes to actually feeling the hand of God himself

-right now God is working through present world powers, but these powers are significantly corrupt
-In the future God's power will be expressed through a Messianic kingdom
-The present world order will pass away after an apocalyptic ending involving a terrifying world kingdom to be replaced by an everlasting kingdom

OVERALL

-The book of Daniel is often misread, should be read as a sign of hope
-Daniel survived the den of lions - many others did not
-Offers appropriate models of behaviour for situations
-When judgment comes on you, hope for deliverance but do not presume it
-God is God and you are not!
