  • Drain away excess fluid in the tissue back into the blood
  • Cells in the lymph nodes remove bacteria and foreign substances
  • Cells in tonsils, thymus and spleen are involved in immune responses

Movement of lymph

A
  • Concentration of skeletal muscle helps to push lymph along. No pump.
  • Lymphatic vessels have valves to stop lymph flowing in the wrong direction
  • Lymph is returned to the blood through the thoracic duct and right subclavian duct
