view state as a necessary evil.˙. small state which doesn't require a lot of money

-should be able to resolve disputes through peaceful discussion/debate

mixed economy - Keynesian economics
why did moderns advocate a mixed economy
-state has right to get involved because they have mandate
- if people don't like it they can overthrow it
why do modern liberals dislike free market capitalism
-govt management necessary to minimise effect of economic downturns
- leads to mass poverty and unemployment if not corrected
