Q

How many kinds of scanning are there?

A

3

2
Q

What are the kinds of scanning? (3)

A
  1. Mechanical scanning
  2. Automatic scanning
  3. Electronic scanning
    - similar to automatic scanning
3
Q

Mechanical transducer

A

Single element, fixed with a motor

4
Q

What do you do with a mechanical transducer?

A

Place the probe on the patient and sweep it back and forth and produce a sector

5
Q

What kind of scanning is automatic scanning? (2)

A
  1. Live scanning
  2. The probe is constantly sending out pulses and receiving echoes
    - building images even when you are holding still
    - shows images in sequence so it looks like a live scan
6
Q

What do you need in order to do electronic scanning?

A

More than one single element

- need arrays

7
Q

What shape are arrays?

A

Usually rectangular

- assembled in a row

8
Q

How many types of arrays are there?

A

2

9
Q

What are the 2 types of arrays?

A
  1. Linear

2. Convex

10
Q

What are the 2 ways to operate linear arrays?

A
  1. Linear sequenced array

2. Linear phased array

11
Q

What is a type of linear phased array?

A

Vector array

12
Q

Linear array

A

Several elements in a row

13
Q

What does linear sequence array involve?

A

Firing groups of elements at the same time

  • so they overlap each other
  • fast segments
14
Q

What would the aperture be in linear sequenced array?

A

It would be apart of the group that you are firing

- width of the group

15
Q

What will each group do in linear sequenced array?

A

Each group will produce a pulse and receive an echo

- produce a scan line of information

16
Q

What do multiple scan lines produce?

A

A rectangular image

17
Q

What is the width of the image?

A

The length of the array

18
Q

What do linear sequenced array consist of?

A

Parallel scan lines, travelling in the same vertical direction

19
Q

LPF

A

Lines per frame

20
Q

Lines per frame

A

Number of scan lines in a frame

21
Q

What makes a frame?

A

Individual scan lines building up

22
Q

What is a frame?

A

Imaged stored in the memory

- can be retrieved

23
Q

What does more LPF mean?

A

Production of better quality images

24
Q

What are 2 types of convex arrays?

A
  1. Convex sequenced array

2. Convex phased array

25
Q

How does a convex/curvilinear sequenced array work?

A

Same and a linear sequenced array

26
Q

What does a curvilinear sequenced array produce?

A

A modified sector image

27
Q

What does the width in the scan plane determine?

A

The lateral resolution

28
Q

What does an ultrasound beam consist of? (2)

A
  1. Near zone

2. Far zone
