Lecture 26 Flashcards

1
Q

Ovid vs. Virgil

A

-At the end of Ovid’s account it goes into detail of what happens to Aeneas after he kills Turnus
-He becomes a god
-Not as much emphasis on Turnus’ death in Ovid’s account. Glossed over.
-Ovid also glosses over the death of Dido too.
-Juno comes around to liking him in the end
-Get story of Turnus getting help from Greek hero Diomedes which we don’t get in the Aeneid
-Diomedes doesn’t help him
-Ovid’s account has a lot of interjections that have nothing to do with Aeneas (peripheral characters)
-Circe
-Scylla
Ovid looks beyond the major points of the story of Aeneid and focuses on the smaller and more trivial aspects.

  • Achaemenides got stuck behind with the Cyclops in the Odyssey
  • Macareus got scared when Odysseus and his men were leaving so he stayed behind
  • Ovid is telling the story through the eyes of two guys who either don’t like Odysseus or thought the heroic journey weren’t worth it. These are moments when Odysseus’ men aren’t at their best.
