1
Q

What are the differences between exocrine and endocrine glands?

A
  • Presence of ducts: ducted (exocrine) and ductless (endocrine)
  • Mode of secretion: via duct (exocrine) and directly into blood (endocrine)
2
Q

What are simple and compound glands?

A
  • Simple: single unbranded duct

- Compound: ducts branch repeatedly

3
Q

What are acinar and tubular glands?

A
  • Acinar: sac like

- Tubular: tube like

4
Q

What are serous and mucous glands?

A
  • Mucous: sticky fluid

- Serous: lubricating fluid

5
Q

What are unicellular glands / goblet cells?

A
  • Isolated secretory cells that secretes mucus
6
Q

Where are goblet cells found?

A
  • Intestinal epithelium
  • Jejunum
  • Large intestine
  • Respiratory tract
7
Q

What are the functions of the goblet cell?

A
  • Secrete mucus for protection

- Support respiratory escalator in removal of foreign particles as mucus acts as lubricant

8
Q

What are parotid glands?

A
  • Serous exocrine glands

- Pair of salivary glands

9
Q

What are the functions of the parotid glands?

A

Secrete saliva that contains enzymes

10
Q

Where are parotid glands found?

A

situated below and in front of each ear

11
Q

What are the histological features of parotid glands?

A
  • Striated duct
  • Numerous serous acini
  • Basally positioned nuclei
  • Stores secretory proenzyme as zymogen granules
12
Q

What are submandibular glands?

A
  • one of the major salivary glands

- compound, tubuloacinar gland, with serous, mucous and mixed acini

13
Q

What are the functions of the submandibular gland?

A

Secretes saliva into floor of the mouth

14
Q

Where is the submandibular gland located?

A

Below the mandible of either side of the neck

15
Q

What are the histological features of the submandibular glands?

A
  • Presence of mucous (pale staining), serous cells (purple staining)
16
Q

What are the functions of the liver?

A
  • Exocrine: secrete bile which emulsified fats and assists in vitamin K absorption
  • Endocrine: secretes albumin and IGF-1
17
Q

What is the function of myoepithelial cells?

A

Embraces acinus, contract using actin and myosin filaments to assist the expulsion of luminal contents
