How does FM 6-22 define character
“…a person’s moral and ethical qualities, helps determine what is right and gives a leader motivation to do what is appropriate, regardless of the circumstance or consequences.”
Character is a sum of all the qualities that make you who you are: values, beliefs, words and actions.
What are beliefs
Beliefs are convictions people hold as true. They are derived from our upbringing, culture, religious background, traditions and experiences.
Beliefs are important to character because they:
Shape our behavior; influence our values, and our actions.
Help people understand their experiences, and those experiences provide a start point for what to do in every day situations.
Influence our priorities. Our priorities can and sometimes will determine what we put first, defend the most, and what we are least willing to sacrifice.
What are ethics
Ethical conduct is concerned with how a person should behave. Ethical conduct is related to character development because it requires one to do the right thing for the right reason.
Define values
Values are things we think are important - we “value” them
Army values are important to the Army and those we serve

Educating subordinates and setting the example to gain understanding of values and their worth
Define Reinforcement
Leaders reinforce behavior and subordinates comply based upon a personal desire to do what is right
Define Internalization
Adopts the value set as your own; behavior is consistent with the value set
