This is a “theory” and not proved science, which is the reason for their conflict
The Id is said to be evil, which is why Lanyon conflicted with Jekyll - refused to believe there is evil in all of us, Victorian men should not indulge in these urges

Shows the fatal impact of the revelation of a secret - may be one of the reasons why Victorian men were so secret - knew their secrets were extremely shocking
Shows that when beliefs (“balderdash”) are disproven, it comes as quite a shock as people were very devoted to beliefs
