Q

began to go wrong,…

such unscientific…

A

wrong in mind
balderdash
Lanyon speaks of how Jekyll changes angrily (“flushing suddenly purple”)
Unusual as he and Jekyll too are old friends, suggesting that they must have had a significant conflict to see “devilish little” of each other
As he seems trustworthy, it is likely he is correct about his change of mental state

Q

differed on…

A

some point of science
We learn this is because Jekyll wanted to separate his good and bad sides - Id away from Ego and Superego
This is a “theory” and not proved science, which is the reason for their conflict
The Id is said to be evil, which is why Lanyon conflicted with Jekyll - refused to believe there is evil in all of us, Victorian men should not indulge in these urges

Q

had his death-warrant written…
“grown visibly balder” compares to
“flesh had fallen away” compares to

A

legibly on his face
“shock of hair prematurely white”
“heart, healthy”
Shows the fatal impact of the revelation of a secret - may be one of the reasons why Victorian men were so secret - knew their secrets were extremely shocking
Shows that when beliefs (“balderdash”) are disproven, it comes as quite a shock as people were very devoted to beliefs
He seems to be the only one to witness the transformation - w/o him, we might not have been sure that Jekyll is Hyde
