1
Q

Kinetic theory describes what?

A

How particles move in solids, liquids and gases.

2
Q

How does an object have kinetic energy?

A

The energy an object has because of its movement.

3
Q

kinetic theory can explain what?

A

3 states of matter.

4
Q

Give an example of the 3 states of matter.

A

Solid - ice.
Liquid - water.
Gases - water vapour.

5
Q

The particular substance in each state are the same but what is different?

A

Only the arrangement and energy of the particles are different.

6
Q

In solids what are the forces like?

A

Strong forces of attraction hold particles close together.

7
Q

The strong forces in the solid hold particles together in a fixed what?

A

Regular arrangement.

8
Q

What are the particles like within a solid?

A

Don’t have much energy.

They can only vibrate about their fixed positions.

9
Q

In liquids what are the forces like?

A

Weaker forces of attraction between the particles.

10
Q

In liquids how are the particles arranged?

A

Close together.
Can move past each other.
Form irregular arrangements.

11
Q

What is the energy like in liquids?

A

They have more energy than the particles in a solid.

12
Q

How do the particles move in a liquid?

A

Random directions at low speeds.

13
Q

What are the forces like in gases?

A

Almost no forces of attraction between the particles.

14
Q

What is the energy like in gases?

A

Particles have more energy than those in liquids or solids.

15
Q

How do the particles move in a gas?

A

Free to move.

Travel in random directions at high speeds.

16
Q

What happens when you heat a substance?

A

You give the particles more kinetic energy.

Vibrate/move faster.

17
Q

The vibration and movement of substances finally can cause what?

A

Solids to melt.

Liquids to boil.

18
Q

Conduction of heat mainly occurs where?

A

Solids.

19
Q

Define conduction.

A

Conduction of heat energy is the process where vibrating particles pass on their extra kinetic energy to neighbouring particles.

20
Q

Conduction occurs throughout the solid and passed all the way through the solid until what happens?

A

Rise in temperature at the other side of the solid.

Increase in heat radiating from its surface.

21
Q

Where is conduction usually faster and why?

A

Denser Solids.

Because particles are closer together, so it will collide more often and pass energy between them.

22
Q

What materials conduct heat energy more slowly?

A

Materials that have larger spaces between their particles.

Insulators.

23
Q

Why are metals good conductors?

A

Because of their free electrons.

24
Q

At the hot end what happens to electrons?

A

Move faster and collide with other free electrons, transferring energy.

25
Q

Electrons can move freely, this is a much faster way of transferring energy, what is the slow method?

A

Passing it between jostling neighbouring atoms.

26
Q

Heat energy travels fast where?

A

Through metals.
