1

acid

a substance with a pH below 7. They contain a higher concentration of H+ ions than pure water.

2

addition reaction

a reaction in which a small molecule, usually a diatomic molecule, adds across the double bond of an alkene.

3

alkali

a substance with a pH above 7 because it has a higher concentration of OH- ions than pure water.

4

alkali metals

the very reactive group 1 metals.

5

alkanes

the simplest homologous series of saturated compounds with the general formula CnH2n+2.

6

Alkanols

A homologous series which contains the -OH functional group. More commonly known as alcohols.

7

alkenes

a homologous series of hydrocarbons that are unsaturated and have the general formula CnH2n. They are isomers of the cycloalkanes.

8

alpha particle

slow moving, positively charged particles that come from the nucleus of a radioactive element.

9

atom

a particle made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.

10

atomic number

the number given to each element in the periodic table. It is equal to the number of protons in an atom.

11

base

a soluble metal oxide that when dissolved in water produces an alkaline solution.

12

beta particles

fast moving, negatively charged particles.

13

catalyst

alters the rate of reaction but is not used up in the reaction.

14

compound

a substance made up of two or more elements chemically joined.

15

covalent bond

a shared pair of electrons between two non-metals.
