John Redmond

A

Led the Irish Nationalist Party up to the First World War. Supported Home Rule and Constitutional Nationalism.

A

Liberal Prime Minister from 1908-1916. Supported Home Rule but failed to get it passed through Parliament.

Andrew Bonar Law

A

Conservative Party Leader later PM. He made the Blenheim Palace speech in 1912 setting out an alliance against Home Rule between the Ulster Unionists and the British Conservative Party.

A

Ulster Unionist Leader. Organised the Solemn League and Covenant in 1912 against the Liberal Government and Home Rule.

Winston Churchill (1874-1965)

A

Member of Asquith’s Liberal Government. He put forward the idea of the Partition of Ulster as a solution. Later he worked with Lloyd George in the talks with Michael Collins in 1921 after the Anglo Irish War.

A

Liberal Prime Minister who led the Government talks with Michael Collins which led to the Anglo Irish Treaty.

Arthur Griffith (1871-1922)

A

Founder of Sinn Fein. He then served in the First Dail as Vice President and Minister of Home Affairs.

Patrick Pearse (1879-1916)

A

Irish Revolutionary who took part in the 1916 Easter Rising. Executed by the British Army 3rd May 1916.

Michael Collins (1890-1922)

A

Led the IRA in the War against the British. He then led the Nationalist’s side in the talks with the British Government which led to the formation of the Irish Free State.

Eamon De Valera (1882-1974)

A

Prime Minister of the Republican Government set up by the Dail. He made one of the most important decisions of his career by not going to the Treaty negotiations in London.
