What was Shirley’s Case, 1604?

A

Shirley was arrested as an MP for not paying debt so Parliament sent the Governor of the Fleet debtor’s prison to the Tower until Shirley was released, showing that James could not freely arrest MPs, excluding severe crimes such as felonies and treason.

What happened when James fought for union of England and Scotland, 1604-07?

A

James wanted a Union of England and Scotland. Parliament felt this would threaten English Laws, and Scottish citizens were seen as backwards. At a conciliatory meeting with the House of Commons and Lords, it was decided commissioners would evaluate the decision. In 1604 and 1606-7 the decision was rejected by parliament due to confusion over status of Scottish citizens.

A

They wanted the royal right to wardships. The Court of Wards would license wardships to family members if a landowner died and the ward of court was under 21. This brought in £60,000 but members of the court often accepted bribes and sometimes the licences were abused, harming the family.
