1
Q

Describe the first process of a ‘Dot + Cross’ diagram of Sodium Chloride + Sodium Oxide

A
  • The sodium atom gives up its outer electron, becoming an Na+ ion
  • The chlorine atom then picks up the electron, becoming a Cl- ion in the process
2
Q

What then happens to the sodium atom? (2)

A
  • It gives up its outer electrons, to become two Na+ ions

- The Oxygen atom then picks up two electrons, to become an O2- ion

3
Q

What do all atoms end up with?

A
  • Full outer shell as a result of this giving and taking of electrons
4
Q

What do Ionic Bonds always produce?

A
  • Compounds with similar structures
5
Q

What do Ions then form?

A
  • A closely packed regular lattice arrangement
6
Q

What do Ionic Bonds have?

A
  • As they are very strong, electrostatic forces of attraction are created between oppositely charged ions
7
Q

Give examples of Ionic Compounds and explain how they are related

A
  • Sodium Chloride and Magnesium Oxide

- They all have similar properties caused by their structure

8
Q

Why is very high MP + BP a property of Ionic Compounds?

A
  • Due to very strong bonds between the ions, which it takes a lot of energy to break
9
Q

Finally, why is conducting electricity a property?

A
  • As when in Aqueous solution (dissolved), the ions seperate and are all free to move, so they will carry an electrical current
