1
Q

What is a hormone?

A

A chemical substance released in small quantities from certain glands that travel through teh circulatory system to elicit a specific response in other cells.
Includes Neurohormones.
DOES NOT include intracellular messengers like cyclic AMP, local mediators like Nitric Oxide, CO2

2
Q

What are some examples of Neuroendocrine

A

Posterior Pituitary, Adrenal Medulla, Hypothalmic releasing hormones.

3
Q

Three general categories of hormones?

A
  • Steroids and Steroid like hormones
  • Amino Acid Derivatives
  • Peptide and Proteins
4
Q

Steroids and steroid like hormones are derived from what?

A

Cholesterol

5
Q

Amino Acid Derivatives are derived from

A

Specifically Tyrosine

6
Q

Endocrine gland locations

A

know them

7
Q

Two methods of hormone action

A

Direct or Indirect or Permissive

8
Q

What is permissive action

A

A hormone that allows another hormone to work better. Example: Thyroid hormone allowing epinephrine to mobilize large amounts of fatty acids by causing an increased number of epinephrine receptors

9
Q

What type of hormones use intracellular receptors?

A

Steroids and Thyroid Hormone

10
Q

What is the function of second messengers

A

1) Amplify hormone signaling

2) Disperse Hormone signaling

11
Q

What are the three categories of hormones measurements

A

Free, Bound, Total (free + bound)

12
Q

What’s the active form of a hormone

A

Free, that’t the type that can get across the capillary

13
Q

What are some types of hormones that use intracellular receptors?

A

Steroids and Thyroid hormone

14
Q

What are some types of hormones that use surface receptors

A

dont know
